Information for the 2020 Hawaii Trip

Below you will find information regarding the trip to Hawaii in 2020.

Invitation: An invitation from Kirk Caldwell, Mayor of Honolulu, has been extended to the Reagan High School Band to perform at the National Festival of States as a representative of North Carolina.
The Trip: The band from Reagan High School will travel to Hawaii during the 2020 spring break to participate in the National Festival of the States in Oahu.  In addition, students will have a rare opportunity to see and experience history that was made in Hawaii including one of the most valuable lessons in our nation’s history: how men and women gave their lives on December 7th, 1941 on “The Day of Infamy.”
Dates: April 13th-19th, 2020
Destination: The group will fly from Charlotte to Honolulu and will be staying in Waikiki.
Performance Opportunities: The band will be performing at Pearl Harbor at the Visitor’s Center, with other possible performances at the USS Missouri, the State Capitol Building, and King Kamehameya Statue.
Educational Opportunities: Students will visit Pearl Harbor where they will have a history lesson from a WWII Historian, visit to the USS Arizona Memorial, and tour the USS Missouri.  In addition, the band will travel to the Polynesian Cultural Center to study the multicultural heritage of the Hawaiian people.  The group will also visit other significant sites such as the Pali Lookout, Eastern Shores, and Diamond Head.
Cost: The cost of the trip will be a maximum of $2,900 per person (pending current airfare rates).  This price is based on quad occupancy in each room.  There will be an upcharge for triple, double, or single occupancy (see below for rates).  We expect this to come down significantly with fundraising and donations.  Nearly all of the band’s fundraising efforts will go to fund students attending the trip.  This price includes airfare, five nights at a deluxe hotel in Waikiki, coach transportation on the island, two meals per day, entrance fees to all sites (listed under educational opportunities), tour management, travel insurance, and more.
Who is Eligible to Attend: All students of the Reagan High School Band Program along with their parents, families, and siblings.  Anyone who is not a student or employee of the WSFCS System must complete a background check through the school system.
Safety and Supervision: The safety and well-being of our students is the most important aspect of this trip, as it is every day in our classroom.  We expect to have a large number of parent chaperones to attend to help manage the group.  In addition to the band directors, Robert Johnston and Kenneth Tysor, other school personnel will be attending the trip.
